Qantas Starts A321XLR Flights in Australia, Details Plan to Add Fourth Lavatory

The long‑range narrowbody anchors Qantas’ Project Winton refresh, opening medium‑haul options as the layout shifts to include an extra lavatory on forthcoming jets.

Overview

  • The first two A321XLRs entered commercial service on SydneyPerth and SydneyMelbourne, with aircraft named Outback Way (VH-OGB) and Great Ocean Road (VH-OGA).
  • Qantas says it is the first Asia‑Pacific operator of the A321XLR and the fourth globally, with a total order of 48 aircraft following an August top‑up.
  • A third jet is due in November and seven are planned to be in service by June 2026, forming the backbone of the airline’s domestic fleet renewal.
  • With a range of about 8,700 km—roughly 3,000 km more than the 737—the type is positioned to open routes into South‑East Asia and India, according to the airline.
  • Early deliveries have three toilets for about 200 seats; Qantas says the first four‑toilet A321XLR will arrive in December and the initial three will be retrofitted, while the cabin brings wider seats, fast free Wi‑Fi and 60% larger overhead bins, with 16 jets to get seatback entertainment for longer routes.
