Overview

  • Federal Court ordered Qantas to pay A$90 million for illegally outsourcing and dismissing about 1,820 ground handlers in 2020.
  • A$50 million of the penalty will be paid to the Transport Workers’ Union and a separate hearing will allocate the remaining A$40 million.
  • The fine comes on top of a A$120 million compensation settlement struck in December for the affected employees’ economic losses.
  • Justice Lee criticised Qantas’ corporate culture and questioned the sincerity of its apologies over the unlawful sackings.
  • Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson accepted the ruling, apologised to former staff and pledged to rebuild trust with the workforce.
