Overview
- A ProPublica investigation published Monday found that Umar Kremlev, head of the International Boxing Association, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for portions of Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson’s May wedding celebrations in the Bahamas.
- The payments reportedly covered a private-island rental and a large fireworks show and were routed through a Dubai-linked company used for IBA transactions, according to records reviewed by ProPublica.
- Bettina Trump posted an Instagram statement signed by the couple confirming Kremlev “very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding” and calling him a “dear friend.”
- Lawmakers and public critics have called for explanations and possible probes, asking what, if anything, Kremlev might have received in return and pointing to national security and ethics concerns.
- Kremlev and the IBA have prior controversies, including financial ties to Gazprom and loss of IOC recognition over governance issues, and Ukraine has sanctioned Kremlev for alleged wartime activities, which increases scrutiny of the payments and their opaque routing.
