Put a Covered Feeding Box Out to Help Hedgehogs Through Winter

With populations falling, households are urged to support visiting hedgehogs using safe feeding boxes.

Overview

  • A viral tip shows how to convert a plastic storage box into a sheltered "hedgehog haven" with a hedgehog-sized entrance and an internal block to deter cats and foxes.
  • Experts recommend meat-based cat or dog food or vetted specialist feed, and they warn against milk, bread and mealworms.
  • Provide a small bowl of fresh water and refresh food at dusk, removing leftovers that could spoil by morning.
  • Although hibernation begins in November, hedgehogs may stay active into December and will wake intermittently to forage.
  • If a hedgehog is lethargic or under about 450g in winter, place it in a ventilated box with a wrapped hot water bottle and contact a wildlife rescue centre.
