Pupy, Last Elephant From Buenos Aires Ecoparque, Dies at Brazil Sanctuary

A necropsy is underway after days of gastrointestinal trouble culminated in a sudden collapse.

Overview

  • Global Sanctuary for Elephants confirmed on Saturday that Pupy died at the Santuario de Elefantes in Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso.
  • Pupy expelled about 1.5 kilograms of black stones before losing stability and collapsing; onsite veterinary efforts could not revive her.
  • The 35-year-old African elephant had lived in captivity in Buenos Aires since 1993 and was transferred on April 18 in a sedative-free, 2,700-kilometer overland journey.
  • Proyecto ELE said tissue samples are being analyzed and laboratory results from the necropsy are expected in the coming weeks.
  • Kenya, another Argentine elephant now housed in the sanctuary’s African sector, stayed nearby during Pupy’s final moments; Pupy’s relocation was a joint effort by the Ecoparque, Fundación Franz Weber, and GSF.
