À Punt Criticized for Airing Bullfighting Instead of Live Coverage of Mass Dana Protest

Staff and unions call the choice a breach of public service, urging leadership changes.

Overview

  • During the evening of October 25, the public broadcaster ran a prerecorded bullfighting program, including footage of Vicente Barrera, from 18:30 to 21:00 and did not switch to live television coverage, though it updated the protest on its website.
  • The event in València was the twelfth demonstration linked to the 29 October disaster, drawing reports of tens of thousands and calling for President Carlos Mazón’s resignation over his handling of the dana.
  • Anonymous newsroom employees circulated a communiqué saying they are ashamed of the decision and accusing management of turning its back on a major public-interest moment.
  • The CCOO union section demanded the immediate resignation of the corporation’s board president, the director general and À Punt’s head of news, with no resignations reported so far.
  • Company committees said a camera and reporter were on site and could have cut in live, noting only two live hits aired during the 9 p.m. newscast, while PSPV and Compromís condemned the move and municipalist representative Ricard Gallego said he will seek explanations at the next board meeting.
