Punjab Urges Centre to Mark Guru Tegh Bahadur’s Martyrdom as ‘Human Rights Day’

The state frames the appeal as a tribute to the Guru’s defense of religious freedom and human rights.

Overview

  • Chief minister Bhagwant Mann said Punjab will ask the Union government to designate the martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur as Human Rights Day to promote secularism and social harmony.
  • Punjab PWD and the Mandi Board will draft a blueprint for a ‘Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Marg’ tracing the Guru’s route to Delhi, with the state also seeking its extension to Gurdwara Seesh Ganj Sahib.
  • Mann proposed sprucing the route taken by Baba Jiwan Singh to carry the Guru’s severed head to Anandpur Sahib and to pursue a ‘Baba Jiwan Singh Marg’ with the Centre and the concerned states.
  • A committee will be formed to include the Guru’s life and philosophy in school curricula, and any content at the Virasat E Khalsa museum deemed inconsistent with Sikh sentiments will be removed.
  • The commemoration plan begins at Gurdwara Seesh Ganj Sahib in Delhi on October 25, adds statewide kirtan darbars from November 1 and seminars from November 15, includes a Srinagar kirtan darbar on November 18 with multiple nagar kirtans converging at Anandpur Sahib by November 22, and culminates with mega events there from November 23–25.
