Punjab to End NSA Detention of Amritpal Singh and Aides
Radical Sikh preacher and MP Amritpal Singh, along with nine associates, will face trial in Punjab after their NSA custody concludes.
- The Punjab government has decided not to extend the National Security Act (NSA) detention for Amritpal Singh and nine of his associates currently held in Dibrugarh jail, Assam.
- Seven of Amritpal Singh's aides will be brought back to Punjab in the coming days to face trial for their alleged involvement in the 2023 Ajnala police station attack.
- The Punjab Police will formally arrest the seven individuals upon their release from NSA detention and will seek transit remand to facilitate their return for legal proceedings.
- Amritpal Singh, who won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an independent MP from jail, is scheduled to be transferred back to Punjab in April when his NSA detention expires.
- The charges against Amritpal Singh and his associates include spreading communal disharmony, attempted murder, and obstructing police duties during the 2023 Ajnala incident.
