Overview
- Executive engineer Nitin Sood, sub-divisional officer Arun Kumar and junior engineer Sachin Thakur were placed under suspension in the Madhopur sub-division.
- Two of the 54 gates failed on August 27–28 during efforts to release excess water from a full Ranjit Sagar Dam, with outflows reported above two lakh cusecs.
- The failure intensified flooding downstream on the Ravi, damaging villages and farmland in Punjab and in areas across the border in Pakistan.
- Officials who went to manually operate the gates were trapped at the site, and one department employee was later found dead after a search.
- Water resources minister Barinder Kumar Goyal said a notice was issued to the company that certified the gates’ capacity, and the firm later countered that structural health assessment was not part of its scope.
