Punjab Sets Basant Lahore 2027 for March 12–14

The announcement signals a provincial push to restore Basant as a regulated cultural and tourism event under strict safety laws with heavy penalties.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced Tuesday that Basant Lahore 2027 will be held from March 12 to 14, inviting youth, overseas Pakistanis and international visitors to participate.
  • The decision follows last February’s three-day Basant revival, which provincial authorities permitted by temporarily suspending a 21-year ban and then reviewed before confirming another festival.
  • Officials reported significant harm during Basant 2026, recording 17 deaths and 160 injuries in Home Department figures while some media sources put the death toll as high as 21; most fatalities were reported as rooftop falls or electrocutions among people aged about 15–30.
  • The province is enforcing the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Bill 2025, which bans metallic and chemically coated strings, makes related offences non-bailable and cognizable, and prescribes three to five years’ jail and fines up to Rs2 million.
  • Authorities say they will continue strict on-the-ground measures after thousands of 2026 arrests and cases were logged and will focus on transport, crowd controls and equipment bans to try to balance public safety with the festival’s economic and cultural return.
