Punjab Seizes 18 Pet Lions in Crackdown After Lahore Lion Attack

Following a weekend mauling by an escaped pet lion, Punjab authorities have escalated enforcement of the amended Wildlife Act.

  • An 11-month-old lion escaped a Lahore farmhouse on July 3–4 and mauled a woman and her two children, causing facial and arm injuries they have since recovered from.
  • Lahore police arrested three owners on charges of negligence and unlawful possession after they reportedly watched the attack without intervening.
  • The escaped lion was captured and transferred to a government-run wildlife park to prevent further harm.
  • On July 7, Punjab’s Wildlife and Parks Department confiscated 18 illegally kept lions, inspected 38 breeding farms and arrested eight individuals for regulatory breaches.
  • Under recent amendments to the Punjab Wildlife Act, keeping big cats without a licence is punishable by up to seven years in prison and fines of PKR 5 million.
