Punjab Rolls Out Local Defence Committees to Sustain Anti-Drug Drive

The initiative embeds citizen vigilantes alongside police to ensure round-the-clock surveillance in Punjab’s final campaign phase

Overview

  • Each village and ward committee comprises 10–20 vetted members led by the sarpanch or councillor, an anti-drug campaign representative, the BDPO and the SHO or their designees.
  • Committees are formally notified by SDMs and receive special government ID cards to facilitate coordination with law enforcement.
  • Panels will operate 24-hour surveillance networks to deter drug trafficking and report intelligence to authorities.
  • Members will lead outreach programs for de-addiction and reintegration of former addicts through street plays, door-to-door campaigns and school awareness drives.
  • Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that key evidence against ex-minister Bikram Singh Majithia has been uncovered and will be presented in court.
