Punjab Reopens Schools With Closures in Worst-Hit Districts

Local administrators will decide which campuses remain shut based on safety inspections.

Overview

  • Government schools called teachers in on September 8 for inspections and cleaning, with students returning on September 9 where buildings were cleared as safe.
  • Private schools, colleges, universities, ITIs and polytechnics resumed on September 8 subject to school managements certifying building and classroom safety.
  • Deputy commissioners kept dozens of campuses closed in flood-affected areas, including about 30 in Fazilka, 36 in Ferozepur, 61 in Gurdaspur, 29 in Pathankot, roughly 50 in Sangrur, and all schools in Ajnala and Lopoke divisions of Amritsar until September 12.
  • Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains launched a statewide “Let’s Clean Our Village Schools” campaign as relief and damage assessments continued across government campuses.
  • Rescue and relief operations by the NDRF, Army, BSF and state agencies continued as the state reported a rising death toll and crop losses, while in Kashmir most schools reopened with around 40 still shut or used as shelters.
