Punjab Presses Rs 20,000-Crore Flood Package in Shah Meeting as States Rush Pre-Diwali Relief

The Centre says assistance is tied to SDRF/NDRF rules pending state assessments.

Overview

  • After a special session, the Punjab Assembly unanimously sought a Rs 20,000-crore central package and condemned delays, while the state set enhanced compensation of up to Rs 20,000 per acre with girdawari to conclude by October 15.
  • Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met Home Minister Amit Shah seeking a special package, as the Home Ministry said Punjab has SDRF funds available and that about Rs 805 crore of the Rs 1,600 crore announced earlier has been released with more contingent on formal submissions.
  • Punjab presented preliminary losses including over 20 lakh people affected, roughly 4.8 lakh acres of crops destroyed, damage to over 17,000 houses, and an estimated financial hit of about Rs 13,832 crore.
  • Maharashtra reported crop damage across roughly 60 lakh hectares, rejected the ‘wet drought’ label, extended drought-style relief to flood-hit farmers, and said a state package will be finalised next week with payouts targeted before Diwali and a memorandum to the Centre to follow.
  • Karnataka estimated crop losses exceeding 10 lakh hectares in North Karnataka, moved over 10,500 people to relief centres, and announced additional per-acre support on top of NDRF norms after an aerial survey.
