Overview

  • The Punjab BJP sought to hold Central-scheme awareness camps on 24 August across nine districts including Mohali, Fazilka, Rupnagar, Muktsar, Mansa, Hoshiarpur, Patiala and Pathankot.
  • The party said police prevented activities at 39 locations and detained multiple leaders and workers as officers intervened to stop the events.
  • Reported detainees included former minister Surjit Jiyani, MLA Sandeep Jakhar, state general secretary Anil Sarin, vice-president Subhash Sharma and district president Kaka Kamboj, with some releases later noted.
  • AAP and Punjab Police said complaints alleged BJP workers were illegally collecting personal data such as Aadhaar details and warned the information could be misused for digital fraud, with earlier complaints also mentioning collection of commissions.
  • BJP leaders said the camps promote access to Central schemes like Ayushman Bharat, PM-Kisan and Vishwakarma, citing an earlier Raipura event where 65 people received Ayushman Bharat cards, and they vowed to continue the outreach.
