  • On June 21, Punjab Police registered an FIR under Sections 109, 115(2) and 61(2) of the BNS and Arms Act against IAS officer Babita Kaler, her husband Stephen Kaler and gunman Shubh Karan Singh for attempted murder and criminal conspiracy.
  • The dispute began when workers hired to dump sand in a vacant plot next to the Kalers’ Jalandhar home clashed with the officer and her husband over landfilling activity.
  • During the scuffle, Shubh Karan Singh opened fire and injured Harpreet Singh, who was treated for a thigh wound at the civil hospital.
  • Investigators have taken Singh into custody and are gathering evidence before formally summoning the Kalers to join the probe.
  • Babita Kaler serves as Punjab’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Stephen Kaler is an industrialist aligned with the Aam Aadmi Party, injecting political interest into the case.
