Punjab Police Arrest Three, Cite JeM-Linked Module in Mohali Cab Driver’s Killing

Investigators say the J&K-based trio confessed, leading to recovery of the cab, a pistol and the driver’s remains.

Overview

  • The arrested suspects were identified as Sahil Bashir, 19, of Kupwara; Aijaz Ahmed Khan alias Wasim, 22, of Kalamabad; and Munish Singh alias Ansh, 22, of Doda, according to Punjab Police.
  • Police recovered the snatched Swift Dzire (PB01-D-6299) and a .32-bore country-made pistol, and retrieved Anil Kumar’s body with three shell casings near the Airport Road/Kandala village area of Mohali.
  • Officers said the men hired the cab from Kharar for the railway station, diverted toward Airport Road, shot the driver, dumped the body and fled with the vehicle before abandoning it near Amritsar; they were later held at the Batala bus stand with local police assistance.
  • Police said Bashir is wanted under UAPA and the Arms Act in Handwara and that he and Aijaz are identified as overground workers of Jaish-e-Mohammad, with a wider probe underway to map networks and assess any planned strikes.
  • The victim’s family alleged police delayed registering an FIR until August 31 despite their complaint and toll-plaza footage, saying earlier action could have advanced the investigation.
