Punjab on Flood Alert as Sutlej Swells After Indian Releases

Upstream discharges with fresh rain are pushing the Sutlej toward a possible moderate flood within 48 hours.

Overview

  • Flood Forecasting Division data show Sutlej inflow has jumped to 68,000 cusecs after Indian releases, up from 28,000 cusecs two days earlier.
  • A low-level flood is in effect at Ganda Singh Wala, and PDMA has warned the site could transition to a moderate flood within the next two days.
  • PDMA has deployed monitoring teams, put commissioners on high alert, and directed Health, Irrigation, C&W, Local Government, and Livestock departments to activate response plans.
  • Officials cautioned that further cross-border releases could send about 35,000 cusecs into the Ravi as rains keep flows elevated, with a medium flood also possible on the Jhelum at Mangla.
  • Local operations continue with drainage in Jalalpur Pirwala and all seven breaches at Noraja Bhutta Bund sealed, while the M-5 Motorway remains closed after damage along a 23-kilometer stretch.
