Punjab Moves to Compensate Flood Victims Within a Month Using ATM Cards

Officials say surveys and ATM cards will ensure transparent payouts as opposition figures press for full compensation.

Overview

  • Punjab’s finance minister said funds are available and loss assessments are underway, with compensation targeted within one month and payments to be delivered via ATM cards.
  • Announced cash grants include Rs.10 lakh for fully destroyed homes and for families of those killed, Rs.5 lakh for partially damaged homes and for the severely injured, with property and livestock losses to be covered.
  • Provincial leaders report joint rescue and relief with the armed forces and multiple agencies, shelter and medical care in camps, and rescues of people and their livestock across as many as 28 districts.
  • In Bhawana, authorities and an NGO distributed roughly two months’ rations to more than 450 people, and officials say efforts will continue until families are back in their homes.
  • Early mitigation plans include small dams, underground rainwater storage, clearing river channels, removing encroachments, and drain repairs, while an opposition estimate puts losses above Rs.88 billion and over 4.75 million people directly affected.
