Punjab Mandates Color‑Coded Waste Bins in All Schools by Sept. 30

EPA inspections start Oct. 1 with fines for violations and certificates for compliant campuses.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif launched the Smart Waste Management initiative with a first‑phase focus on public and private educational institutions.
  • The EPA order, signed by Director General Dr Imran Hamid Sheikh under Section 6(1)(t) of the Punjab Environmental Protection Act, 1997, ties the rollout to the Climate Resilient Action Plan 2024 and Pakistan’s SDG commitments.
  • Schools must install five labeled bins for source segregation: paper (yellow), glass and lab waste (green), organic/biodegradable (grey), metal (red) and plastic (orange).
  • EPA field offices will run awareness efforts and conduct periodic checks, and compliant schools must display an EPA Smart Waste Management Compliance Certificate at the main gate.
  • Institutions can request pickup of segregated waste via the provincial helpline 1139, with implementation support from the Local Government & Community Development Department and oversight by ministers Maryam Aurangzeb, Rana Sikandar and Zeeshan Malik.
