Punjab Launches Special Damage Assessment in Fazilka After Floodwaters Recede

Officials have begun a transparent, time-bound assessment quantifying crop and home damage after floodwaters receded by two feet.

Overview

  • Deputy Commissioner Amarpreet Kaur Sandhu ordered a special girdawari to document losses to paddy and cotton fields and residential structures across Fazilka.
  • Sub-divisional magistrates have been instructed to complete the assessment with full transparency and within a strict timeline to ensure no eligible claimant is overlooked.
  • Preliminary reports indicate over 11,700 acres of standing paddy and cotton were submerged in at least 20 villages, following earlier submergence of more than 20,000 acres districtwide.
  • Drainage Department and PWD teams deployed pumps and machinery to clear stagnant water and restore temporary road links, with the Ghaggar river’s Bhankharpur site dropping two feet in 12 hours.
  • Farmers in Tahliwala Bodla, Singhpura and Chahlan continue blocking the Fazilka-Malout road to press for accelerated relief disbursement and permanent drainage solutions.
