Punjab Launches Data Lake and Signs Huawei Training Pact

The moves aim to create sovereign computing capacity, develop 1,300 local AI master trainers, underpin a province-wide plan to integrate AI into governance by 2029.

Overview

  • Saturday in China, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced the launch of the Punjab Data Lake and the OneMap platform to centralize provincial data for planning and service delivery.
  • Punjab and Huawei agreed to train 1,000 young people and 300 women as Huawei master trainers to build local AI teaching and deployment capacity.
  • Officials reviewed proposals to create an Artificial Intelligence Delivery Unit, a sovereign cloud and multiple data centres at Nawaz Sharif IT City, but those infrastructure plans remain at the proposal and planning stage.
  • OneMap will bring together more than 12 terabytes of geospatial data from 31 departments and over 6,000 datasets and will be linked to the Punjab Socio‑Economic Registry to help resolve land issues and target services.
  • Punjab frames the package as part of deeper Pakistan–China tech cooperation focused on investment, local skills development and job creation, with a stated goal of an AI‑integrated provincial system by 2029.
