Punjab Government Promises Amendments to Land Pooling Policy as Protests Intensify

The AAP government has vowed no forced acquisitions, promising to expand the consent process after protests over its plan to convert farmers’ land into residential and commercial plots.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema reiterated that the land pooling policy is entirely voluntary and will not involve any forcible acquisition of farmers’ land.
  • AAP MLA Kulwant Singh announced plans to revise the consent mechanism by reinstating inputs from local panchayats, farmer associations and village communities.
  • Congress protesters led by Punjab state president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring demonstrated outside the Greater Mohali Development Area office, demanding immediate withdrawal of the policy.
  • BJP leader Tarun Chugh branded the scheme a “ponzi” land-looting plan and joined calls for its rollback.
  • Opposition figures highlighted a freeze on transactions involving 65,000 acres to question the voluntary nature of the policy and heighten distrust among farmers.
