Punjab Finalises Large Muharram Security Plan as Provinces Strengthen Protections

Officials say the package pairs tens of thousands of officers with cameras, legal movement limits and service plans to reduce the risk of sectarian attacks during the first ten days of Muharram.

Overview

  • Punjab Police confirmed on Sunday that it has finalised a province-wide plan that will deploy more than 124,000 officers and personnel to secure 47,280 religious events during the first ten days of Muharram.
  • The operation will use Safe Cities and district CCTV networks for continuous monitoring and will install metal detectors, walk-through gates and rooftop deployments at sensitive sites.
  • Specialised units including the Counter Terrorism Department, Special Branch, Dolphin Squad and Police Response Unit will be mobilised to patrol procession routes and coordinate with local police.
  • The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 for days one to ten and ordered a ban on pillion riding for the ninth and tenth days with limited exemptions while control rooms, medical teams, water points and traffic plans are being readied in districts.
  • Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have issued parallel contingency orders, with Sindh directing strict monitoring of proscribed individuals and KP authorities considering temporary communication restrictions on key Ashura days to limit security risks.
