Punjab Extends School Holidays to January 7 as Cold Wave Triggers Regional Closures

Officials cite IMD warnings of dense fog and low visibility to prioritize student safety.

Overview

  • Punjab’s order covers all government, aided, recognised and private schools, with classes set to resume on January 8.
  • The School Education Department issued the directive after Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced the extension under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s direction.
  • In Assam’s Kamrup (Metropolitan), government and provincialised schools are shut from December 31 to January 6, and heads were told to halt activities and inform families, with private schools advised to decide independently.
  • Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar kept all schools closed through January 1 for classes from nursery to Class 12, while teachers and staff were instructed to report to duty.
  • Teachers’ unions in Ludhiana pressed for a 10 am start because of fog and early-morning travel risks, and the IMD expects very dense fog to persist with possible thunderstorms on January 1.
