Punjab Extends Cleanliness Campaign 2.0 to September 12

The state says the extra days will convert a surge in citizen reports into expanded services and tougher enforcement to keep streets clean.

Overview

  • The extension, announced by Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Tuesday, followed the resolution of 5,407 of 6,459 complaints submitted through the M-Seva app, a completion rate of about 83 percent.
  • Launched on August 29, the campaign covers all 166 urban local bodies and has expanded door-to-door garbage collection across cities to prevent the reappearance of identified garbage vulnerable points.
  • The government will run four weekly mega cleanliness drives beginning September 12 that will partner with NGOs, market associations, youth clubs, religious organisations and resident welfare associations to boost volunteer participation.
  • Officials said the awareness phase will be followed by fines for public littering and that a post-campaign review will include photographic evidence purporting to show permanently eliminated garbage vulnerable points.
  • The extension builds on recent field visits to towns such as Kurali, Kharar and Nangal and is intended to test whether combining regular collection services, community action and enforcement can produce lasting changes in urban waste behavior.
