Punjab EPA Orders Province-Wide Pre-Smog Crackdown

Inter-agency inspections using Safe Cities cameras aim to prevent a seasonal fall in air quality by targeting brick kilns, heavy diesel vehicles and dust sources.

Overview

  • EPA Punjab has accelerated pre-smog field deployments with Director General Abdullah Nayyar Sheikh directing officers to identify pollution hotspots and take prompt legal action.
  • The agency has ordered a zero-tolerance rule for brick kilns and will bar any kiln that lacks compliant zig-zag firing technology from operating.
  • The EPA has intensified action on smoke‑emitting heavy vehicles, reporting 1,745 challans, 621 impoundments and Rs4.483 million in fines in Lahore for May–August as part of its buildup.
  • Enforcement will be coordinated with district administrations, traffic authorities and the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, which will use its camera network to flag and monitor heavy transport at city entry points.
  • Industries and construction sites have been told to install and run emission-control systems and dust-suppression measures while the EPA will run district awareness campaigns to reduce repeated violations and protect urban health.
