Punjab Designates Three Sikh Centers as Holy Cities, Bans Meat, Liquor and Tobacco

Mann outlined development pledges — a university at Anandpur Sahib, free pilgrim transport, a heritage street — with implementation still in progress.

Overview

  • The Punjab Assembly passed the resolution unanimously during a special session in Anandpur Sahib held to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the first Vidhan Sabha sitting outside Chandigarh.
  • The designation covers the Amritsar walled city (Galiara around the Golden Temple), Anandpur Sahib and Talwandi Sabo, which align with three of the five Sikh Takhts.
  • The new rules prohibit the sale and consumption of meat, liquor, tobacco and other intoxicants within the declared holy city areas.
  • Mann announced a proposed world-class university named after Guru Tegh Bahadur in Anandpur Sahib, a heritage street for the city, and free e‑rickshaw or mini‑bus services for devotees in all three locations.
  • An interfaith committee is planned to guide oversight, with the state to allocate funds and seek central support for development, cleanliness, security and religious tourism as operational details are finalized.
