Punjab Declares Monsoon Over as Rivers Recede and Repairs Begin

Recovery begins with breach repairs, road restoration, damage assessment.

Overview

  • PDMA said river flows across Punjab have returned to normal with the Sutlej still slightly elevated but falling and no significant rain expected in the coming week.
  • Authorities reported lingering transport disruption as 22 km of the M-5 remain closed with 10–12 km still underwater and the Jalalpur–Lodhran road shut, with repair work ongoing.
  • Officials now cite 123 to 127 deaths from the floods, while thousands of villages were hit and more than 2.58 million acres of farmland suffered damage with notable losses to rice, sugarcane, maize and cotton.
  • Breach-filling is underway across affected sites and the major breach at Sadhnai on the Ravi has been closed, as barrage levels in Sindh continue to improve.
  • Relief operations continue with at least 319 relief camps and 407 medical camps active, mass evacuations of people and livestock completed, and a formal loss survey set to start on September 24 to guide compensation.
