Punjab Court Jails AAP MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura for 4 Years in 2013 Molestation Case

The sentence raises the prospect of disqualification under election law.

Overview

  • Additional sessions judge Prem Kumar handed Lalpura a four-year term under the SC/ST Act and IPC provisions, imposed a ₹50,000 fine, ordered immediate custody, and directed that all sentences run concurrently.
  • Six others also received four-year terms and three got one-year sentences, including multiple Punjab Police personnel; one accused in Tihar Jail is to be sentenced on 16 September and another died during the trial.
  • The assault occurred on 3 March 2013 at a Tarn Taran wedding venue when Lalpura was a taxi driver, and the Supreme Court later took suo motu notice and ordered protection for the victim and key witnesses.
  • Under the Representation of People Act, a sentence of two years or more can disqualify a legislator, placing the Khadoor Sahib seat at risk unless a higher court grants relief.
  • The survivor expressed satisfaction with the verdict after a long fight as AAP said it would not defend wrongdoing and opposition leaders demanded his removal, pointing to recent cases involving Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, Raman Arora, Vijay Singla and Amit Rattan Kotfatta.
