Punjab Confirms Schools Will Reopen on August 24

Officials have ordered province-wide health, infrastructure and security checks to be finished before students return to reduce risks during the monsoon.

Overview

  • Punjab officials confirmed on Tuesday that summer holidays will not be extended and that all public and private schools must reopen on August 24.
  • Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat and the School Education Department directed cleaning and disinfection of rooftops and water tanks and ordered removal of stagnant water to prevent dengue breeding.
  • Schools were told to inspect drainage, washrooms and drinking water supplies and to install barriers around any ongoing construction or repair sites to protect pupils.
  • Electrical safety checks of fans, lights, switches, sockets and wiring were mandated and CCTV and other security equipment must be made operational before reopening, with school heads required to carry out final inspections.
  • District education officers will conduct physical inspections and schools face penalties for noncompliance, but reports so far do not show how widely the directives have been implemented at individual schools.
