Punjab CM Meets Amit Shah, Seeks Rs 20,000-Crore Flood Package

The Centre says part of earlier aid has been released and further support will be considered after Punjab submits a formal damage memorandum.

Overview

  • Bhagwant Mann pressed for a special package and revision of SDRF/NDRF norms, calling the Rs 1,600 crore announced earlier insufficient for the scale of losses.
  • An MHA statement said Rs 805 crore of the previously announced assistance has been released and cited an SDRF balance of Rs 12,589.59 crore available to Punjab.
  • The Centre noted an IMCT surveyed affected areas on September 3–6 and said additional aid will be processed once the state files its detailed memorandum.
  • The Punjab Assembly passed a unanimous resolution demanding Rs 20,000 crore and the state raised compensation rates with a special girdawari underway to start payouts before Diwali.
  • Punjab reported over 20 lakh people affected and roughly 4.8–5 lakh acres of crops destroyed, while Maharashtra said about 60 lakh hectares were hit and plans a state relief package next week with payouts targeted before Diwali.
