Overview
- Punjab officials announced on Friday, October 23, 2026 that Lahore will host a tightly limited Basant on March 12–14, 2027 with kite-flying allowed only during those days.
- The government set a December 31, 2026 deadline for rooftop safety walls of at least 3.5 feet and ordered inspections of older or unsafe roofs that could be barred from hosting kite activity.
- Deputy commissioners issued detailed supply rules that permit manufacture from Sept. 5, 2026 to March 14, 2027, allow purchase and storage from Feb. 1, 2027, and limit retail sales to Feb. 10–March 14 while requiring digital registration and stock records for makers and sellers.
- Authorities banned metal wire, nylon and abrasive-coated strings, fixed kite size limits, and instructed the traffic police to fit free safety rods to more than two million motorcycles as a protective measure.
- Officials warned of strict enforcement including building sealing and penalties up to five years in prison and fines of Rs2 million for violations outside the authorised period, a move aimed at preventing the injuries that prompted past Basant bans.
