Punjab Assembly Resolves to Limit Bhakra Water Allocation to Haryana

The water-sharing dispute between Punjab and Haryana intensified as Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann refused to release additional water to the neighbouring state.

Overview

  • Punjab's legislative assembly passed a resolution on May 5 to continue providing only 4,000 cusecs of water to Haryana for drinking purposes, refusing any additional allocation.
  • The resolution criticized the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) for convening meetings without adhering to procedural regulations, calling its decisions unconstitutional.
  • Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann argued that improved canal infrastructure and reduced reservoir levels leave no surplus water to share with Haryana.
  • Haryana's government, supported by an all-party resolution, continues to demand its full allocation of 8,500 cusecs and has pursued legal action over Punjab's police deployment at the Bhakra headworks.
  • The Union Home Secretary had earlier advised releasing 4,500 cusecs for eight days, but Punjab's latest resolution reinforces its stance against any further releases beyond the 4,000 cusecs already provided.
