Rejecting a proposed ₹49.32 crore security bill, the Punjab Assembly declared that its police force’s seven-decade record at BBMB sites negates the need for CISF.

Overview

  • On July 11, lawmakers unanimously passed a resolution opposing CISF deployment to BBMB installations, including the Bhakra-Nangal dam project.
  • The Assembly highlighted that Punjab Police have protected these hydropower projects for almost 70 years without significant security lapses or incidents.
  • Punjab first registered strong objections in letters to BBMB on May 27 and July 4, then its cabinet on July 7 approved revoking the Congress government’s 2021 consent for central forces.
  • The resolution stipulates that the state will not bear the annual ₹49.32 crore cost for housing and equipping 296 CISF personnel.
  • Lawmakers urged the Punjab government to press the Centre and BBMB to abandon any further plans for CISF deployment to safeguard state jurisdiction and fiscal autonomy.
