Overview
- A high-level Alibaba Cloud delegation met Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif in a meeting described by officials as taking place on Sunday and expressed keen interest in expanded cooperation with Punjab’s IT sector.
- Maryam Nawaz gave in-principle approval for an AI-powered multi-disease scanner and directed provincial health authorities to prepare a pilot project for implementation in Punjab.
- The proposed scanner uses non-contrast CT with AI analysis to screen for up to about 10 conditions in roughly two minutes, including pancreatic, liver, gastric, oesophageal and colorectal cancers, cardiovascular risk and fatty liver disease, and it is intended to support clinicians rather than replace standard diagnostics.
- Officials said the talks covered a possible strategic partnership and built on an MoU signed earlier at the federal level, with Alibaba Cloud also reporting ongoing discussions about establishing a local data centre and services for SMEs and overseas Pakistanis.
- Punjab has already made AI education mandatory from Grade 1 and deployed AI across Safe Cities, agriculture and health programs, and the pilot will show how quickly AI tools can change screening workflows and patient access to early diagnosis.
