Punjab and Haryana HC Bar Halts Vote on Sarangpur Relocation

The association will wait for the Centre’s decision on dereserving land beside Court No. 69 before choosing between expansion or a move.

Overview

  • The deferral follows consultations where Additional Solicitor General Satya Pal Jain engaged stakeholders as they weigh expansion against relocation.
  • One option is a six-storey block with three basement parking levels and about 16 courtrooms, estimated at ₹200 crore and subject to UNESCO approval.
  • The Sarangpur plan envisions 48.8 acres with roughly 42 lakh sq ft and 140 courtrooms, but access and traffic on the approach road have raised concerns.
  • For immediate relief, the court directed a new kacha parking lot with green pavers to be completed in 60 days and facilitated record storage by handing over a renovated Sector 17 building.
  • The current push stems from a PIL by employees’ union secretary Vinod Dhatterwal, and the bench noted any relocation would require approval by a Bar general body vote, with alternatives like regional benches or the former furniture market site also in discussion.
