Pune University Withdraws 'Voice of Devendra' Notice After Protests

University officials say the contest was organised by private foundations, with student groups continuing to call for protections against political influence on campus.

Overview

  • The NSS wing posted the elocution competition notice on August 5 under the title 'Voice of Devendra', inviting students to speak on 'Developed Maharashtra'.
  • NSUI activists and allied student bodies protested on August 12 and 13, denouncing personality worship and demanding the acting NSS director’s resignation.
  • Acting NSS coordinator Dr Sadanand Bhosale said the university never organised the event, clarifying that the notification was issued at organisers’ request and has been removed.
  • Swarambh Foundation, IFELLOW Foundation and Nashik Pratisthan, the private organisers, denied any political intent and accused critics of spreading misinformation.
  • Opposition leaders including NCP’s Rohit Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Sushma Andhare faulted the university for compromising campus neutrality and vowed to call out similar instances.
