Pune Reports 59 Cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome Linked to Contaminated Water and Food

The Pune Municipal Corporation has launched a large-scale epidemiological survey and intensified inspections to address the outbreak of the rare neurological disorder.

  • The outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in Pune has risen to 59 cases, with most patients from areas like Sinhagad Road, Dhayari, and Khadakwasla.
  • The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has deployed 100 teams to survey over 2.5 lakh residents and collect water and food samples to trace the source of contamination.
  • GBS, a rare nerve disorder, is often triggered by bacterial or viral infections, with symptoms ranging from muscle weakness to paralysis and, in severe cases, respiratory failure.
  • Local residents and political groups have criticized the PMC for failing to ensure access to safe drinking water, particularly in areas merged with the city two years ago but still reliant on untreated water supplies.
  • Health officials have formed an expert panel and initiated public awareness campaigns, urging residents to avoid open food stalls and consume boiled water as preventive measures.
