Overview
- Union minister Murlidhar Mohol directed cutting the posted speed to 30 kmph, doubling speed guns from three to six, inspecting heavy vehicles at the Khed-Shivapur toll plaza, adding reflectors and bus bays, and holding a follow-up review in December.
- The Pune Municipal Corporation announced rumble strips every 500 meters, LED boards, speed cameras and stricter enforcement, proposed a 40 kmph cap on the Katraj Tunnel–Navale Bridge stretch, and set a six-month target to open four service roads.
- Longer-term steps include fast-tracking the Jambhulwadi–Warje ring road DPR by PMRDA, moving the elevated corridor DPR to the state cabinet, and expediting service roads and underpasses with quicker land acquisition.
- NHAI identified five black spots across the 6.8 km Katraj New Tunnel–Navale Bridge corridor, with 2012–2023 data showing high numbers of overspeeding, loss-of-control, rear-end collisions and skidding crashes.
- Despite repeated crashes, only one speed detection camera currently covers the stretch, and an NHAI official warned that coasting heavy vehicles in neutral on the slope can overheat brakes and lead to failures.
