Pune Intensifies Dengue Control After 2,291 Cases This Year

The municipal corporation has ordered coordinated inspections, targeted fogging and expanded testing to shrink mosquito breeding and preserve hospital capacity.

Overview

  • The Pune Municipal Corporation says the city logged 2,291 dengue cases between Jan. 1 and Oct. 20, 2026, and is treating the Oct. 18 death of a nine-year-old girl as a suspected dengue fatality while a civic health audit committee investigates.
  • Civic teams inspected about 1.4 million homes and 2,831,386 water containers this year, found Aedes larvae in 18,885 containers across roughly 13,000 houses, issued 2,664 notices and collected ₹6.30 lakh in fines.
  • Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram directed the health, building permission, anti-encroachment and solid-waste departments to coordinate preventive action and ordered targeted fogging around patient homes and biological larvicides for stored water.
  • The PMC reported available capacity in hospitals with private facilities listing 4,409 beds including 670 ICU beds and civic hospitals 333 beds including six ICU beds; the civic body made rapid diagnostic kits available at dispensaries and free confirmatory tests at Dr Naidu, Dr Kotnis and Kamala Nehru hospitals while mandating case registration on IHIP.
  • Officials warned residents to remove clean stagnant water from flower vases, AC trays and construction sites, urged prompt medical care rather than unproven remedies, and said sustained warm, wet conditions this year may delay the usual post-monsoon drop in cases.
