Pune Finalizes 41-Ward Map for Civic Polls, PCMC Approval Still Pending

The final map clears a key step toward court-mandated municipal elections in Maharashtra.

Overview

  • The Pune Municipal Corporation published its final delimitation, setting 41 wards to elect 165 corporators with 40 four-member panels and one five-member panel.
  • Officials said 5,922 objections were heard, with 1,329 accepted fully and 69 partially, and 4,524 rejected after review.
  • The final map alters boundaries in 13 wards and renames 8, with Balajinagar–Ambegaon–Katraj now the largest ward at a population of 123,981.
  • Opposition parties, including Congress, NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT), alleged the ward design advantages the BJP, though the civic body says valid suggestions were incorporated.
  • PCMC’s ward structure awaits State Election Commission approval expected Monday, while the commission has already cleared BMC’s wards, after which reservations and election dates will follow.
