Pune Declares Controlled Zones and Orders 5-Km Ring Vaccination After Lumpy Skin Disease Cases Reach 906

Authorities have banned cattle movement and launched insect control measures while scaling up goat pox vaccinations and mobile veterinary teams to protect dairy livelihoods.

Overview

  • District Collector Jitendra Dudi has prohibited movement of infected or exposed animals, fodder and hides in nine talukas by designating infection sites as ‘Controlled Zones’ under the 2009 Animal Disease Control Act.
  • A 5-kilometre ring vaccination around outbreak hotspots is underway, with 5.8 lakh goat pox vaccine doses distributed and 5.7 lakh cattle inoculated, and additional doses being procured for newly affected areas.
  • Six mobile veterinary teams deployed under the Chief Minister’s Animal Health Scheme are delivering doorstep treatment and government veterinarians report sufficient stocks of essential medicines.
  • Local bodies have been instructed to implement barn sanitation, disinfection protocols and central-advised insect control programmes to curb vector-borne spread.
  • As of July 22, Pune has recorded 906 confirmed LSD cases in cattle—300 active infections, 591 recoveries and 15 deaths—with Shirur, Ambegaon and Junnar talukas hardest hit.
