Publishers Urge Opt-Ins as Google’s Preferred Sources Personalizes Top Stories

U.S. and India users can now elevate selected publishers in Top Stories via a dedicated From Your Sources carousel.

Overview

  • Google moved Preferred Sources out of testing on August 12 for users in the United States and India, with a rollout progressing over several weeks.
  • Users can add outlets from the Cards-and-Star icon beside the Top Stories label or directly at google.com/preferences/source.
  • Articles from chosen publishers surface more often in Top Stories and also appear in a separate From Your Sources section for relevant searches.
  • Newsrooms including Forbes, TODAY, Newsweek, NBC San Diego, the New York Post, Page Six, and WGN are publishing guides and prompts encouraging readers to add their sites.
  • Selections can be unlimited and edited at any time, other publishers still appear in results, and some sites may present an on-page Add as a preferred source button.
