Public Transport Fares Rise in Maharashtra, Impacting Millions

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has implemented a 14.95% hike in bus fares across all routes, citing rising fuel and maintenance costs.
The fare hike affects MSRTC's fleet of 15,000 buses, which transport approximately 55 lakh passengers daily, making it one of India's largest public transport networks.
Commuters in Mumbai and its metropolitan region will also see a ₹3 increase in the base fares for CNG-run auto rickshaws and black-and-yellow taxis starting February 1, 2025.
Passengers have expressed dissatisfaction with the MSRTC fare hike, citing poor bus conditions and calling for improved services before price increases.
The revised fares for auto rickshaws and taxis will only apply after mandatory meter recalibration, which must be completed by April 30, 2025.
