Public Celebration of Life Set Dec. 4 for Vero Beach Locksmith Killed During Eviction

The funeral home says the service for Army veteran David Allen Long at Calvary Chapel will be open to the public.

  • Visitation begins at 1 p.m. with a 2 p.m. service on Thursday, Dec. 4, at Calvary Chapel, 941 18th Street in Vero Beach.
  • Long, 76, was shot on Nov. 21 while assisting Indian River County deputies with an eviction and died two days later.
  • Sgt. Terri Sweeting-Mashkow was also killed in the incident, and Deputy Florentino Arizpe was treated and released from the hospital the same day.
  • The resident involved, identified as 37-year-old Michael Halberstam, was wounded during the confrontation and died on Nov. 22.
  • In lieu of flowers, Long’s family asks for donations to a local Humane Society, and a separate memorial for Sgt. Sweeting-Mashkow is scheduled for Dec. 2.
