PTI-Backed Khurram Zeeshan Wins KP Senate By-Election

Provincial lawmakers filled the seat vacated by Shibli Faraz’s disqualification following May 9 riot convictions.

Overview

  • Zeeshan secured 91 votes to defeat PML-N-backed Taj Mohammad Afridi, who received 45, with one ballot declared invalid.
  • Out of 145 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly members, 137 cast ballots, while four Awami National Party lawmakers abstained.
  • Voting ran from 9:30am to 4pm in the Assembly’s Jirga Hall under returning officer Saeed Gul, and proceedings were reported as peaceful.
  • A day before the poll, the Supreme Court dismissed Faraz’s bid to halt the by-election after the Peshawar High Court had already refused to reinstate him.
  • Zeeshan said his priority is securing Imran Khan’s release, and Chief Minister Sohail Afridi publicly backed him, as media accounts differed on whether three or five candidates contested.
