Overview
- Layla Ahmed pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment after calling security guard Ian Sullivan a “f***ing Welsh c***” during her sister’s seizure at Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales.
- Prosecutor Nicholas Evans told Cardiff Magistrates’ Court that Ahmed became aggressive, was asked to leave and then challenged why targeting a Welsh person could be racist.
- District Judge Rhys Williams ordered a £120 fine, £50 victim compensation, £85 prosecution costs and a £48 victim surcharge, payable at a minimum of £20 monthly.
- Defence solicitor Amelia Butt described Ahmed’s outburst as a moment of desperation and noted that the 20-year-old first-time offender has expressed remorse.
- The ruling reaffirms that national origin is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010 and that harassment on that basis constitutes unlawful racial discrimination.
