PSX Reopens Strongly and Tests 178,000 Resistance

A sustained close above 178,000 would signal a break from days of range-bound trading, inviting fresh buying.

Overview

  • The Pakistan Stock Exchange reopened on Thursday after a one-day Eid Miladun Nabi holiday and moved into positive territory early in the session.
  • Intraday gains ranged from roughly 805 points at mid-session to as much as 1,205 points in some reports, with the KSE-100 touching highs near 178,635–178,650 before later profit-taking.
  • Trading activity was active but data snapshots differed across outlets, with reported volumes of about 131 million shares and a traded value of Rs14.38 billion in one report and roughly 89.8 million shares in another.
  • Buying was broad based across autos, cement, banks, oil and gas, oil marketing and power/refinery stocks, and heavyweight names such as HUBCO, MARI, OGDC, PPL, POL, HBL, MCB, MEBL and UBL traded higher.
  • Firmer Asian markets and a drop in global oil prices after reports of talks over the Strait of Hormuz supported sentiment, but the index’s ability to sustain a close above 178,000 will depend on afternoon flows and later-session selling pressure.
