PSNI Renews Appeal 24 Years After Arthur Berryman’s Halloween Murder

Detectives are re-interviewing witnesses under the Legacy Investigation Branch’s case allocation model.

Overview

  • Arthur Berryman, 46, was stabbed multiple times in his Imperial Street home in East Belfast at about 11:30pm on October 31, 2001, and died at the scene.
  • Police say a masked man in a dark hooded jacket and light-coloured face covering forced entry and is believed to have fled on foot into a nearby alley.
  • Detective Inspector Ailish McCrissican described a “savage and sustained” attack and said investigators do not believe the killing was sectarian.
  • A man and a woman were previously charged in the case, but the charges were withdrawn and no conviction has been secured.
  • The renewed appeal asks anyone with information to contact the Legacy Investigation Branch or PSNI on 101, use the online reporting routes, or provide anonymous tips via Crimestoppers.
